Dikenga — Les Quatre Soleils

Among the Bakongo, life is one sun passing through four moments: conceived at midnight (Musoni), born at dawn (Kala), at full strength at noon (Tukula), passed to the world of the ancestors at dusk (Luvemba). One sun, four moments, and the Kalunga line, the water threshold between the worlds, which the cycle crosses without ever stopping. This cosmogram, the dikenga, survived the Atlantic crossing: by the tradition of the First African Baptist Church in Savannah, it is found pierced into the floorboards of the church. To wear one of the Four Suns is to wear the moment where you stand, and the certainty that nothing ends.
