Kala is the rising sun: birth, the first step, pure potential. In the dikenga cycle the new sun breaks the Kalunga line on the right-hand side, half risen, its first rays cutting upward into the dark. The Kala emblem holds that exact moment in an embroidery-style print medallion of charcoal, ivory and pale gold on deep black: the instant before everything, when nothing has been spent and everything is still possible. This is the piece for departures and rebirths, for the first morning of the new city, the new name, the new chapter, the thing you finally started.

Ce que ça signifie / What it means

In Kongo cosmology, life is one sun moving through four moments: conceived at midnight (Musoni), born at dawn (Kala), at full strength at noon (Tukula), passed to the world of the ancestors at dusk (Luvemba). This cycle is the dikenga: one sun, four moments, and the Kalunga line, the water threshold between the worlds, which the cycle crosses without ever stopping.

Bunseki Fu-Kiau, African Cosmology of the Bântu-Kôngo.
