Kalikan, the oath. Sworn by the hunters in 1222, taken up by the assembly of Kurukan Fuga in 1236, held ever since by the memory of the griots. The signature emblem of the collection: an embroidery-style print medallion in warm gold, earth ochre and laterite red on a deep black tee, a Mande spear and a calabash ladle crossed in a rising X just below the centre of the field, the blade and the bowl, the word given and the word kept. To wear this piece is to take the oath up as your own. Around it, a ring of dots, an echo of the forty-four articles.

Kalikan, le serment. Juré par les chasseurs en 1222, repris par l'assemblée de Kouroukan Fouga en 1236, tenu depuis par la mémoire des griots. La pièce signature de la collection : médaillon imprimé effet broderie, or chaud, ocre de terre et accents latérite sur tee noir profond, une lance mandé et une louche-calebasse croisées en X sous le centre du champ, pointes hautes ; la lame et le bol, la parole donnée et la parole tenue. Porter cette pièce, c'est reprendre le serment à son compte. Autour, un anneau de points, écho des quarante-quatre articles.

The Manden swore twice. In 1222, the hunters' oath proclaimed seven declarations: one life is one life; hunger is not good, slavery is not good; everyone is free to speak. In 1236, after the victory of Kirina, Sundiata Keita gathered the assembly of the Manden at Kurukan Fuga and the charter took form. Carried from mouth to mouth by the griots for nearly eight centuries, the tradition was set down in writing in 1998: forty-four articles compiled with the griots (Kankan version). It stands among the oldest known declarations of rights, inscribed by UNESCO in 2009 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Kalikan carries the whole tradition: the oath of 1222 and the charter of 1236. The empire of Mansa Musa did not begin with gold. It began with an oath.

Portée de bouche en bouche par les griots pendant près de huit siècles, la tradition a été fixée par écrit en 1998 : quarante-quatre articles compilés avec les griots (version Kankan). Une des plus anciennes déclarations de droits connues. Kalikan porte l'ensemble de la tradition : le serment de 1222 et la charte de 1236. L'empire de Mansa Moussa n'a pas commencé par l'or. Il a commencé par un serment.
