Le Serment du Manden
In 1222 the Manden swore an oath; in 1236 the assembly of Kurukan Fuga made it a charter. Five emblems, one declaration each: one life is one life; hunger is not good, slavery is not good; everyone is free to speak; the guest is sacred; and the oath itself. Eight centuries of memory carried by the voice of the griots, forty-four articles set down with them (Kankan version, 1998), inscribed by UNESCO in 2009 on the intangible cultural heritage of humanity list.
