Nkembo · Twelve Flames Tee No. 07
Glory here is not applause. It is the radiance of a line of people who kept their fire through everything, and the way that light stands on your shoulders when you walk into a room. The Nkembo tee carries the flame of glory: a compact three-tongued fire in deep gold, crowned by seven long rays like a sunrise that belongs to a whole lineage. An embroidery-style print medallion in deep gold on black, ringed in beadwork, with the word NKEMBO on the banner.
What it means
Nkembo means glory in Lingala. In the album Kimuntu (Bana Bilaka World Sound), Flame No. 07 names the state of radiance: what shines from you when your roots hold, the brightness a family passes down further than any inheritance. The seven rays are the light going outward; the flame is the source that never left home. Word note: common Lingala usage; the twelve flames and their numbering are the creation of the album Kimuntu.
Part of Collection 04 · The Twelve Flames. Flame No. 07 · The Glory. Twelve flames, named in Kikongo and Lingala: the states of being the album Kimuntu travels through.
